When choosing a logo you need something that reflects your company and something you can live with for awhile. One prime mistake some companies make is to continuously be working and reworking their logos. Just because YOU get tired of it doesn’t mean your market has.
A logo can be just a graphic like the Nike “swoosh”, or letters like “HP”, or the full name of the company like “Coca Cola”.
If you look at the Quaker Cereal logo, it hasn’t changed much in over 100 years.
Some logos do get modernized but rarely do successful companies mess around much with their logo after they have profitably branded their company. Just recently GoDaddy revamped theirs. It is a new dull and same-same, boring logo. The personality of the old one is gone. Now it is just a wait-and-see if they keep it.
Company Logos
When requesting a graphic artist come up with a logo idea you need to be as specific as you can.
– What colours do you want?
– Do you have a design in mind?
– What “feel” or information do you want the logo to project?
– Do you want something innovative done with the company name or do you want a symbol or drawing?
Create a Logo
There are several ways to create a logo design. First it’s a good idea to have a good idea. If you contact a graphic designer, hoping they will read your mind, one of two things are going to happen.
1. they will stop talking to you,
2. they will stop talking to you after the fifth revision.
The simplest way to go about having a logo created is to do some research first.
– decide on your colours
– decide on what you want the graphic to express.
A law firm will have a different logo in mind than a daycare centre.
Using search terms like ‘logo design samples’ will give you lots of images to look at. You will find something you like that you can either mimic (assuming it isn’t trademarked) or at least something to spark an idea.
There are free logo makers online that do require some graphic skills, and others require no graphic skills.
Other services offer logo design competitions. You pay a nominal fee for several graphic artists to compete for your money.
Another way is to have several drafts done at a low fee each, choose the best, then pay for revisions and the final top quality graphic design that you can use anywhere.
Remember, once you start to brand your company and using your new logo design, people will associate your logo with you. People will also become attached to the way they identify you. Every time you change your logo you will have to strategically re-brand your company to familiarize your customers with your new image.
Rebranding can get expensive. Both in advertising and loss of sales.
