This article is about how to use the documentary “Making a Murderer” as an example of how you can leverage the notoriety of this series to add profits to your business niche.
This is a system that can work with just about any headline with a “rubber neck” effect on the general population. Essentially you can put together a report, book, or publish a Kindle book and then borrow the traffic generated from a celebrity event to bring you and your business sales and profit. It doesn’t matter if the event is positive or negative.
Your report or book needs to be helpful to the buyer but the primary goal to writing the book is for lead generation and converting those leads to customers. Essentially the book or report needs to be developed backwards.
Don’t worry – I’m getting to how Steven Avery ties in, in just a minute…
What it means to develop a publication backwards is to consider the true end result desired BEFORE you even start writing. If you already have a book there are still ways to adapt what you have done, although it may be a little trickier.
How to Know What People are Willing to Buy
If people are actively searching for something then that THING is already selling. It is much easier to swim with the current. Don’t worry about other people being in the same market there are steps you can take to stand out (I cover this below).
One really beneficial reason to write a book is because the likelihood of selling a book is pretty good. A unique aspect to books (as opposed to other physical products) is people
It is easy to search to see what some of the best sellers are in different categories. Check both paper and kindle. Some popular topics still don’t have a lot of Kindle choices. If you write one then that is one way to stand above the rest in a popular niche. You can also make shortcut notes for popular topics that people will look for.
Making a Profit from the Series “Making a Murderer”
To use a current example from the video world and how to tie in readers, take a look at the recent Netflix hit “Making a Murderer”. This is a very popular show and topic simply because of the thousands (if not MILLIONS – Netflix doesn’t publish the numbers) of people who have been watching hour after hour of the 10 episode series.
Some pioneering folks have smartly piggybacked their product/brand by making their own little YouTube video’s that are also popular because they have made a relation with the main event. For example; titles like “10 Questions Not Asked”, “Innocent or Guilty?”, “Updates & Theories” etc.
Does this mean a related Kindle book would sell? It certainly looks like it. Right now there are a few books related to the movie and look above – people certainly appear to be buying more than one at a time.
The first book “Missing Evidence”
Not only that but they are managing to rank highly in some pretty tight and uncompetitive categories. Even with crappy reviews!
How does that court case, documentary, or murder tie in with your business? Maybe it doesn’t. But it could if you are a lawyer, someone who offers a video or documentary service, or maybe even a fiction novelist, you could tie it to your business. It is just one example of how something popular can spin off into a Kindle that you can write to attract customers and leads.
Just being contradictory can promote sales give you a following.
What Business are You In?
If you are already running a business you want to grow and market using Kindle then first make a list of all the aspects of that business.
-
– What are the most common questions you get asked?
– What is your “money maker”? ie: the ONE thing that brings in 70% – 90% of the revenue for your business.
– What is the thing you do better than anyone else?
– Why would you buy from you?
For example; if you have own an excavation business you know septic systems is a big profit maker. You also know your biggest money maker comes from the panicked call from someone who’s tank is leaking. AND you know that
By writing an ebook that says “10 Ways to Fix a Leaky Septic” and subtitle it “Before you Spend $40,000 on a New Septic – Read This”. Inside the book you offer several helpful things that they can do first. If they still need a tank they will be more apt to call you because you are now the
On top of this idea you can also generate more to your passive income by listing other businesses in your book. You can then sell the license the use of your book to septic businesses in towns all over the world. The book also offers you the opportunity to sell advertising space to “Local Contractors” on page inside your book. Another potential means of income is adding your own line of healthy septic maintenance products that can be sold online on your website. You can also include a catalogue of products for the do-it-your-selfer like plastic tanks, risers, lids etc.
Kindle Leads for General Business Ideas
If you are still trying to decide what business you want to be in then Kindle is also a great way to research a niche. The top three are money, health, dating. These can be broken down even further. Health can be diet, exercise, weight loss, strength or any combination. Diet can be targeted to health, fat, carbs, or time. Use the Amazon book research methods to find out what is popular right now.
After you decide what business you want to be in you can target your customer by finding out what is missing from the other books or products out there. Maybe you can do a better presentation. Or, sum it up into steps. If it’s a big topic you can do a “report” that boils everything down into short and concise explanations. Then tie this to your business. One great way to figure out what people want or aren’t getting from the information available already is to read the reviews. People will tell you what they are looking for.
Selling More Books & Products
Hoping to develop Kindle books for a profitable income on the book sales alone, is probably not going to work out the way you want. Usually books don’t generate a lot of income. Some do but most don’t. That is why the eBook needs to be thought of as a lead generator. It is a way to introduce people to you and your business. It is also a way to tie in other books and products. Inside the first page or two you can have a link to your author page, website, or product listings. This way people who don’t even buy your book will have a chance to click your link to at least learn more about you and possibly buy a different book or product.
Titles like “How to Make Money Scrapbooking?” or “How can I Raise Rats for Profit?” will be found in searches more likely than a meaningless title like “Bringing the Behemoth Empire to Your Computer”
Judging a Book by Its Cover
Yes a cover is important. There are companies and freelancers that can do a decent job for a good price. There are also online programs you can use yourself. Use bright colours, images of people, or something that draws the eye of your prospect to your book so it stands out on the page in a sea of others.
This is where you can play another strategy as well. There might be some books selling well but don’t have a great cover. Look in the “also bought” lineup and come up with a cover that will stick out and be more compelling standing next to the others.
SEO and Other Tricks for Kindle Sales
SEO is important for the online search engines and SEO is important on Amazon because it is its own search engine. Along with keywording the title, the subtitle and description also need to be keyworded. Not only will this help to rank your book on Amazon itself but in Google, Bing, and other SE’s as well. Remember too that you don’t just write the description about the contents of the book but also target what people will be seeking. Use your prospects search words in your title and description instead of industry words.
Know what the common slang terms are in your industry used by the consumer. These are the words they will be using to find the solutions to their problems. Position your Kindle as a part of the solution they seek. Use up all the space they give you to write a really great sales page for your book.
Getting Rave Reviews
Trolls, trolls, everywhere trolls. For whatever reason there are people out there that are so unhappy they have to spread their venom wherever they go. These are the dicks who give you one star and leave comments like “you kant spell fer krap!” Really helpful! Unfortunately their one star weighs in on the total and this CAN hurt your sales.
You can kill two birds at once by taking advantage of FREE kindle promotions. During this time your book is free and people love free stuff. Promote it on social sites like Facebook, and other book forums. You will get a bunch of downloads and a lot of people will comment. These giveaways also help to raise the ranking of your book.
Some people will opt to pay for reviews. So far this is allowed so long as you don’t suggest what the person should give your book for a rating. It is still a risky business if suddenly these reviews get removed for being sketchy like Google did with the business listing reviews. Its up to you if you want to seed your newly launched book with paid reviews.
You can also solicit reviews by offering a bonus inside the book like “let me know when you have left your review and I will send you (AWESOME bonus product).”
Try using Kindle to collect leads, generate a passive income, promote your business, sell products, and grow your list.
