When you purchase your domain through a company different than the one you are hosting with you need to do two things to make sure your website will appear on the internet.
1. Assign that domain to your hosting account.
2. Change the name servers at the place you bought your domain to the ones provided by your Hosting company
Change Name Servers
I do this first – it goes faster if you do.
For this example I will assume you are going to, or have purchased your domain at GoDaddy.
Log in to your GoDaddy account and select “View My Account”
Next, scroll down a little bit and on the “Domains” section, click on the “Launch” button.
Find your domain and click on it
Now you will need to know what your new name servers are going to be. Log into your Hostgator account and on your cPanel page scroll down to the bottom. On the left you will see your Name Servers.
It will look like ns1000.hostgator.com ns2000.hostgator.com
At GoDaddy when you clicked on the domain you will be hosting over at Hostgator you will see a page like this one.
Locate “Nameservers” and click on the blue link “manage”
A box will pop up with the current Nameserver settings.
Be sure to select the “custom” radial button.
Select “Edit Nameservers”
When you do this, you then enter the NEW name servers from your Hostgator account.
Select SAVE.
Assign Domain to Hostgator
Go back to your cPanel at your Hostgator account.
Scroll about halfway down until you see the section heading “Domains”
Click on the folder marked “Addon Domains”
The next window you will be asked to enter the information.
In the top section where it says “New Domain Name” enter your domain including the .com or .net or whatever it is. In this case I entered bestonlinepersonaltrainer.com
When you click on the next box – it will automatically fill in the information.
Now you need to enter a password twice, or use the password generator provided.
That’s it for that – congratulations you have now assigned your GoDaddy domain to your Hostgator account.
Next step will be to install your new WordPress to your newly assigned domain.
