Starting a Service Business During COVID-19 Lockdown

This is a series of “How To” for anyone who is healthy enough and needs to make money during this difficult time.

Like many of you I have found myself in self-isolation. In truth, this isn’t much of a change from my regular life as a marketing consultant, but it did require that I find someone to run errands for me.

I figured this would be easy since I live in an area highly populated by seniors. Wrongfully I thought there must be someone already doing this.

There were people who did yard care and housekeeping but no “errand service” or “personal grocery shopping” business that I could find.

So I put up an ad on the local online “Buy & Sell” and job posting website. In two days there were two bites. Neither of whom I felt would be suitable for various reasons. The main reason is both said they needed “money” until the government sent their cheques. This told me they would not be reliable and didn’t want to work but wanted money.

Fortunately over those two days one industrious young man did want to work and put up his ad. I hired him, he’s fantastic! He isn’t sitting at home waiting for the government cheque and has a young wife and baby at home. He wants to get his name/service out there but doesn’t know a thing about how to start a business, find enough clients (that will pay), or how to put up a service business website.

So in this time of strife I have offered to “give back” by doing this for him. I am also going to post how and what needs to be done step by step for anyone else who is willing to do the work.

On top of that I am willing to answer any and all questions while you try and build your COVID-19 sensitive, home service business. Just email or leave your questions below. Please note that your emails won’t be personally answered at this time but I will post the answer with your questions so everyone can benefit.

Crisis Brings Business Opportunities

As in any time of crisis there are also opportunities to help those in need and to profit. The way to ensure you have an income is to find a need and fill it. Another way of saying this is – help someone.

Profiting isn’t the same as “Profiteering” – profiteering is illegal and not a good long-term business plan. The hoarding of toilet paper and price gouging is just bad karma.

Also – helping doesn’t mean to volunteer. There are plenty organisations that do that. Your job is to simply find a way to help people and charge them money for your service. Don’t worry about people wanting you to work cheap or free. I will explain how you manage that in another post.

The strategy I am using to start and build this business is the same strategy I recommend for any small business. It is the “Business Blogging” system.

It takes a bit of effort but it is the least expensive and low barrier entry so you can get started today. It also helps you to build your business presence over time. Essentially any work you put into your business will remain an asset for as long as you have your service business.

Now that you have your service niche chosen, you need to pick a name for your business.
